Safe Routes to School National PartnershipShort Summary: Join us to discuss Safe Routes to School (SRTS) as a powerful cause that has garnered widespread support in efforts to increase biking and walking in local neighborhoods. Brooke Driesse will describe the work of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership to remove barriers to walking and biking to schools and create a framework for long-term policy changes around school siting, Complete Streets, and leveraging governments funds for SRTS projects. She'll share new information about funding opportunities through the federal stimulus package. Elisa Wong will describe how Kaiser Permanente, a prevention-oriented healthcare organization, has leveraged its resources to support SRTS efforts and share ideas for how advocates can work with organizations to support increased biking and walking. Bring your own ideas and experiences about engaging in SRTS efforts for a discussion and interchange.
Presenter bios:
Elisa Wong (panelist) is Program Manager for Community Health Initiatives in Kaiser Permenante's National Community Benefit Program.
Andrea Azuma (moderator) is Project Manager for Healthy Eating, Active Living at Kaiser Permanente's Regional Community Benefit Program in Southern California.
Brooke Driesse (panelist) is the California State Network Organizer with the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, where she works to leverage additional resources for SRTS, remove barriers to walking and bicycling to schools, and create and institional framework for long-term policy changes.
