Summary:
Union de Vecinos is a community based non-profit organization that builds Networks of Neighborhood Committees throughout Boyle Heights and the City of Maywood. This workshop will highlight strategies used by Union de Vecinos to recover the alleys and the streets in Boyle Heights since 2004. Union de Vecinos has installed lighting in 43 alleys in Boyle Heights, installed 2 stoplights, stop signs, repaved streets, slowed traffic, and organized multiple activities in the alleys. This workshop will discuss the community based approach we use to improve our neighborhoods and change how the city prioritizes resources for our community.

Presenters: Laura Cuadros is a community organizer with Union de Vecinos and has 16 years of community organizing experience in Peru and East Los Angeles. Claudia Gomez is also resident of Boyle Heights who participated in the Public Allies program and has been a community organizer with Union de Vecinos since 2007. Elizabeth Blaney is Co-Director and a co-founder of Union de Vecinos, resident of Boyle Heights and has been doing community organizing since 1996.
