Bike Research Agenda
Feb 16 2009, 3:20 PM EST
Would you be interested in attending/participating in a potential break out session at the Summit focused on bike research? I know there are many people who have and are conducting important research on bike topics. A break out session could be a way to foster dialogue about a bike research agenda, including what research exists, what is being done, and what you would like to see in terms of more research. Please let me know if you would be interested in attending/participating in a research session or if you think a survey would be a more appropriate way of eliciting information and recommendations that could potentially lead to a funded research project conducted by graduate students. Thank you.

Great suggestion. Science is on our side and it does count in political discourse. Furthermore, there are interesting cases where foundations (www.rwjf.org) may support research which can itself can border on advocacy work. Have you seen Cycling and Society, Ed Horton, Rosen - looks very interesting - I would also think an inter-campus bicycle research seminar conference would be an interesting proposition :)

Hey its Ele Munjeli of Bikex Database. I consider science the road to redemption in bicycle advocacy. Many of our efforts are flawed with anecdotal evidence, a legacy of advocacy as a reactionary, environmentalist movement. Nonetheless, I consider actual, documented evidence of cyclist habits the most effective way to promote bikeways funding and development. Lets connect! I love the numbers argument...Do you find this valuable? |

Thank you for your comments. I am contacting universities. Do you know anyone who would want to be part of round table discussing their research?

Colleen, I'm trying hard right now to gather data and frankly enough political clout to attempt to push forward a comprehensive transportation plan, a large part of which would hopefully concern bicycling, as a substitute for a slated parking lot construction project on an endangered habitat here in Claremont. It's on the Harvey Mudd College campus, a place which Will Toor and Spense Havlick's incredible book, Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities, thoroughly reveals as a setting ripe with reinforcing trends. And I've been in touch with Donald Shoup who unfortunately was very truthful about his perfect record with opposing parking lots--perfectly unsuccessful that is. But, well, as the project is just now taking baby steps, and always seems so insanely optimistic in a place like the Inland Empire, I guess I just wanted to say I'd be more than happy to help/participate.
