Latino Outreach
Mar 8 2009, 5:24 AM EDT
I see that the bulk of riders in LA are working class Latinos, yet I saw little representation at the summit (relatively speaking). What is being done to outreach to this community from other orgs? How about the black and southeast Asian community as well?I ask because I spoke to several LATT students who were like: "a bike summit, I ride my bike, what the heck do all these people do?", and have want to see some more inclusion (granted citylites and LACBC do good work) brought to the table. any insights or programs doing so? Do you find this valuable?

This week a teenage kid in my building asked me where to get a bike. I sent him to the Bicycle Kitchen and they seem to have good support for that sort of thing. There was a cool postcard in Spanish and they have a earn-a-bike program for teenagers. I live at Pico Union and as you say, alot of my neighbors are riding bikes..its hard to ask for activism from a community which is suspicious of authority: undocumented residents tend to keep their heads down for fear of being discovered, and the rest of the community protects the undocumented. Besides peer to peer, like supporting my neighbor and his friend who also wants a bike, I'm not sure how to engage this community.
